BalloonSats are high altitude research platforms for student created payloads. Using weather balloons, students launch their payloads to the edge of space. Tracking and recovery are made possible using ham radios and real-time GPS transmissions. In Arkansas, the BalloonSat program is managed and operated by the Arkansas Academy for Space Science Education and funded by the Arkansas Space Grant Consortium. Currently, teams of educators at the secondary and college level are perfecting the methods and procedures to successfully launch and recover these high altitude balloons.
